Gateshead is a large town in Tyne and Wear, England, on the southern bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne. Gateshead and Newcastle are joined by seven bridges across the Tyne, including the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
The town is known for its architecture, including the Sage Gateshead, the Angel of the North and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
The borough of Gateshead stretches almost 13 miles along the south bank of the river Tyne and covers 55 square miles, making it the largest of the five Tyne and Wear metropolitan boroughs.
The derivation of Gateshead as a place name is that it’s the Northern end of the Bishopric of Durham, located at the head of the road (gate) from Durham. Gate is a Norse word meaning road or lane and it is still found throughout the North of England as a street name.
